Influence of German Naval Policy free essay sample

Assess the relative influence of three of the following in the American decision to declare war on Germany in 1917. German naval policy, American economic interests, and allied propaganda The American decision to declare war on Germany was influenced by several factors of varying degrees. To a great extent, the aggressive German naval policy contributed to the involvement of the United States in World War I. A secondary influence on this decision derived from U. S. economic interests abroad and on the homefront. Another influence leading to America’s entrance into war was the use of Allied propaganda. Therefore, the combination of German naval policy, American economic interests, and allied propaganda influenced to the American decision to declare war on Germany. The stimulus of the German naval policy was arguably the most impactful on the decision of the U. S. to declare war on Germany. Though the U. S. had been established with neutrality, American trade with countries at war was unhindered. As the war progressed the Central power of Germany became depleted of resources due to a blockade of highly advanced fleet of war ships. U. S. became involved in a conflict when Germany threatened our trade with Great Britain. Several German U-boats began sinking ships that were sailing for either the transportation of people or goods and arms. [1] Wilson viewed these actions as â€Å"wanton act[s],† and after a particular ship called the Lusitania was torpedoed by German U-Boats in 1915, the U. S. threatened to retaliate with military intervention against Germany. By this point the American population exhibited a growing resentment toward the German regime. Although the German government agreed first to restrict their submarine warfare via the Arabic pledge by sending a warning before taking aggressive naval action, but later changed to a new restriction via the Sussex which restricted this warfare by targeting only enemy military ships. Wilson, who strived for â€Å"peace without victory,† struggled morally because of the force that Germany used against the U. S. Four days after Germany resumed unrestricted submarine warfare, Wilson broke all diplomatic relations with Germany in 1917 which was his last attempt to achieve what his slogan for the 1916 election entitled: â€Å"He kept us out of the war. As well as being a profound advocate for lasting peace, Wilson also pursued his foreign policy of â€Å"Moral Diplomacy† with unabated hope and patience although this hope was never fulfilled. Though he possessed such versatility, the greater part of his moral struggle was the decision to declare war on Germany. A less power ful sway on the American decision to declare war on Germany was U. S. economic interests. The development that occurred from WWI was one of the greatest economic booms in the nation’s history. Because of the status of neutrality, the U. S. had the right to continue trade with belligerent countries, and since there was a need for its general use, metal was the most profitable trade with nations at war. Not only did this benefit the recipient’s economy, but the U. S. economy benefitted greatly from it as well. When the War Industries Board instigated the immediate production ammunition and armor, businesses in industry welcomed the guaranteed business and carried out the request. Trade between the U. S. and Germany diminished to 90% because of extensive, supreme blockade of German ports. The supplies sent on ships such as the Lusitania were considered contraband which was illegal to trade to these countries in Europe at the time. This led not only to the sinking of many merchant ships but to the deeper resentment of Germany. This economic fueling of the England and France with huge amounts of arms, grain, cotton, and clothing brought the U. S. closer to the side of the Alliance in Europe. These countries looked to American bankers for loans in order to pay for American resources, and by 1917, loans to Allied governments exceeded $2 billion while German loans reached $27 million. Trade and loans brought the U. S. even closer to the Allied cause, and because of the extensive investments placed on these belligerent countries, the U. S. would do no good to remain neutral for as long as the war promoted a distinct winner. Wilson often protested English naval policy that involved American goods and money, whereas Germany’s submarine policy threatened American lives. Therefore, Wilson’s strengthened resentment toward Germany was an ancillary influence leading to U. S. decision declaration of war on Germany. A minor influence on the U. S. decision to declare war on Germany was with the use of Allied propaganda. To utilize the concept of â€Å"preparedness,† the army was regulated by the Selective Service Act of 1917 in which the 2nd draft was formed with an age limit of 18-45 years. The results of the draft concluded with 24 million registered men but only 3 million were drafted along with 2 million volunteers. This amount was achieved by the use of propaganda used to target the emotions of all who see it. Famous British war propaganda for draft recruiting aimed to invoke fear and the desire for revenge on Germany which was depicted as a Hun, ape, or some killing machine. Collectively, the propaganda was used for nationalistic purposes which made the U. S. more in agreement that the war was and needed to happen; however, the population did not how involved the U. S. would get in the war. World War I pulled the U. S. into the unrest of Europe by the ropes of several significant factors. The most effectual influence was the crisis with Germany and their dreaded U-boats which was a hindrance to U. S. keeping a neutral status and pursuing economic interests. Though this economic interest was of lesser influence than the German navy, the effect of propaganda on the U. S. decision about the war had even less power to influence this historical decision that changed the entire war up to its end. Trying to influence the Congress to pass the declaration of war, the multifaceted possibilities collectively created far-reaching results that may have prevented Europe from its eventual end

Computer forensics and investigations Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Computer forensics and investigations - Essay Example After identifying the risks, the paper goes on to name an example of legislation, which can be used against the company, in this case the Cookie law. Finally, the employee contract at the company needs to be studied with the aim of making a prospective employee be aware of these risks and know how to manage them without claiming ignorance. Question # 1 Forensic Readiness Planning Business Continuity Planning, and Their Testing Both forensic readiness planning and business continuity planning help a company in dealing with the effects of interruptions to their operations. Business continuity planning identifies the exposure of an organization to external and internal threats while synthesizing soft and hard assets to give the organization effective protection and recovery from these threats (Nelson, 2012, p. 23). It does this while maintaining the organization’s value system integrity and competitive advantage. A BCP acts as a roadmap on how to continue operations under adverse conditions. Forensic readiness planning, on the other hand, involves enabling an organization to have digital evidence available before the occurrence of an incident. Since digital evidence could be requested at any time in support of a formal process, an organization needs to have access to all evidence that supports its position in case such an occurrence takes place. While BCP encompasses an extensive range of threats to the organization’s operations, FRP is mainly concerned with the threat brought about by formal requests for digital evidence. An organization requires both an FRP and a BCP because they offer slightly different forms of protection to the company, both of which are vital and interdependent. Business continuity planning involves the development of a practical plan detailing how the organization will prepare for, while continuing to operate, a crisis or incident. The plan aids the organization to identify preventable risks, prepare for risks beyond its contr ol, and respond to the occurrence of a risk. Forensic readiness planning deals specifically with the availability of the organization’s digital data if needed as evidence. It allows for the gathering of admissible evidence in a legal manner that does not interfere with business operations. FRP specifically prepares the organization for legal battles that may involve its digital data by gathering evidence on potential disputes and crimes that may impact it (Nelson, 2012, p. 25). Having both an FRP and a BCP increases the sense of security among the organization’s clients, personnel, suppliers, partners, investors, and vendors. When an organization plans for the occurrence of risks, these stakeholders can carry on with their duties with a sense of security. Planning allows the organization to consider the effects of interruptions to its operations while making priorities for the recovery process. It also helps the personnel learn what to do when interruption occurs, in o rder to minimize data loss and disruption. An organization’s FRP and BCP need to be tested often in order to enforce them and make adjustments. Most companies that practice these plans conduct bi-annual tests on them during which a mock ‘drill’ is performed for a specific risk. Over time, personnel may change, and the new staff requires to be initiated. Old staff also needs to be re-informed on the plans once in a while, with the most excellent method to do this being to visualize

Negotiations - Case Study Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Negotiations - Case Study - Essay Example Lack of management skills makes the firm not to be at par with advances in technology (Hastings, 2009). Technical support makes it possible for the business to be aware of modern technologies. With this can be able to understand the operations of the industry resulting to familiarity with clients. Therefore the industry can provide reliable services and appropriate solutions to the client problems. Lieutenant observed that the company suffered from insufficient training because of one stenographer who was in charge of five semi-skilled workers. This is due to ineffective management of the company. The firm is the only one producing the special machine but has very complex production processes that have made the employees to be resistant to new innovations (Vanden & Consulting, 2008). These employees basically resist new training because top managers have not been fully trained. Ineffective management also results in high expenses as a result of ignorance over security measures. Contingency are the allowances that help the management in addressing risks within the firm. The contingency allowance ensures that managers are able to account for all the errors and omissions made in the firm. Lieutenant Early should ensure that all the company operations and activities are performed perfectly. This calls for changes in the operations of the company (Hastings, 2009). This will reduce the amount of money paid as contingency allowance because there will be an improvement in the efficiency of organizational processes. Advantages and Disadvantages of a Market Entry Strategy for SMEs Essay

Advantages and Disadvantages of a Market Entry Strategy for SMEs - Essay Example The risks associated with entry into a new and unfamiliar market can be reduced by applying pertinent market entry strategies. Under this strategy, exporting can be divided into two parts such as indirect exporting as well as direct exporting. Indirect exporting is referred as decreasing the producer’s risk by selling the manufacturer’s product in the foreign market with the help of others. On the other hand, direct exporting signifies that a company controls the export activities as well as sells the manufactured products directly to the foreign market. Therefore, in the direct exporting strategy producers have more control on the activities of a foreign market (Tielmann, 2010). In this paper, the benefits and the disadvantages of a foreign market entry approach about exporting of small and medium enterprises (SME’s) as well as multinational enterprise (MNE’s) are discussed. Evaluating the advantages as well as the disadvantages of market entry strategy is most important in order to develop SME’s exporting. Entry strategy of exporting for SME’s can be defined as sale of goods produced by the SME’s in the foreign market with the help of agents and distributors (Bendt & Skropska, 2011). The selection of optimal entry mode strategy is imperative for SMEs in the international marketing context in order to make their presence felt in the competitive foreign markets where there are a number of existing competitors present. SMEs have been observed to possess quite simple objectives as well as organisational structures. SMEs’ key aim is to make growth as well as development, which can be ensured by maximising the anticipated profit level. However, SME’s face resource and information constraints (Decker & Zhao, 2004).

Anaylsis of To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell Essay -- To His Coy

This poem has been written in the form of a request to the poet's coy (or shy) mistress, the grant his desire for them to make love. He argues that for to delay makes no sense because 'at my back I always hear/time's winged chariot hurrying along near'. Much of his argument is made through a series of hyperbole (h-p rb-l) A figure of speech in which exaggeration is used for emphasis or effect, as in I could sleep for a year or This book weighs a ton. Here he is describing how slow they could move to consummate their love if there were no pressure of time. As all Cavalier poets, he supports the statement of "carpe diem", or "seize the day", that is an extension to the Renaissance code of chivalry. Today, the speaker's speech may seem sexist in its attitude toward women and irresponsible in its attitude toward the coy mistress (the speaker doesn't explain how he would seize the day if the woman became pregnant, for example). The mistress would like to postpone sex (theoretically until she and the speaker are married). The speaker wants to consummate their physical relationship now. The poem's speaker is attempting to persuade "His Coy Mistress" to have sex with him. The speaker seems frustrated, impatient, and to feel a sense of urgency in pursuing this goal. Although the rhyme scheme of the poem follows a simple couplet pattern (AA, BB, and so on), two couplets use slant or irregular rhyme, not simply to vary the monotonous pattern but to reinforce the poem's theme. Lines 23 and 24 use the approximate rhyme "lie/eternity"; lines 27 and 28 repeat this irregularity: try/virginity." The poet uses pauses and enjambment (running one line into the next without a pause) to break up the neat pattern that the couplet rhyme scheme ... ...ense of urgency and dread if the man does not get what he wants. When Do French Transitive Verbs Take a Direct Object

A transitive verb takes a direct object, either stated or implied, to complete its meaning. The verbs prendre (something),  Ã‚  Ãƒ ©tudier  (something) and donner (something)  are all transitive because they require something to receive their action. An  intransitive verb, on the other hand,  doesnt need, and cant take, a direct object to complete its meaning. In fact, intransitive verbs may never have any kind of object. Direct Objects Direct objects are the people or things in a sentence that receive the action of the verb. To find the direct object in a sentence, ask who or what is the object of the action.   Ã‚  Ã‚  I see  Pierre.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Je vois  Pierre.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Who  do I see?  Pierre.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Im eating the  bread  Ã‚  Ã‚  Je mange  le pain.  Ã‚  Ã‚  What  am I eating? Bread. French Direct Object Pronouns Direct object pronouns  are the words that  replace  the direct object  so that we dont say, Marie was at the bank today. When I saw Marie, I smiled. Its much more natural to say, Marie was at the bank today. When I saw  her,  I smiled. French direct object pronouns include:   Ã‚  Ã‚  me  /  m  Ã‚  Ã‚  me  Ã‚  Ã‚  te  /  t  Ã‚  Ã‚  you  Ã‚  Ã‚  le  /  l  Ã‚  Ã‚  him, it  Ã‚  Ã‚  la  /  l  Ã‚  Ã‚  her, it  Ã‚  Ã‚  nous  Ã‚  Ã‚  us  Ã‚  Ã‚  vous  Ã‚  Ã‚  you  Ã‚  Ã‚  les  Ã‚  Ã‚  them Note that me  and  te  change to  m  and  t, respectively, in front of a vowel or  mute H.  Le  and  la  both change to  l. French  direct object  pronouns, like  indirect object  pronouns,  are placed  in front of the verb.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Im eating  it.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Je  le  mange.      He sees  her.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Il  la  voit.  Ã‚  Ã‚  I love  you.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Je  taime.  Ã‚  Ã‚  You love  me.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Tu  maimes. Note that when a direct object precedes a verb conjugated as a  compound tense  such as the  passà © composà ©, the past participle should  agree with the direct object. Also, if an object (a person or thing) is  not preceded by a preposition, it is a direct object; if it is, in fact, preceded by a preposition, then that person or thing is an indirect object.
